Friday's featured comic: John Mulaney

I started the Friday's Featured Comic posts as a service for everyone to experience new comics. Comics, who are traveling constantly from club, to bar, to festival, and who aren't always (or at all) seen on network or cable television. There is so much good talent out there that it is a shame if more people don't get a chance to see them perform.

I first saw John Mulaney perform a short set about a month ago on Late Night with Conan O'Brien. Often times, when  a "non-veteran" comic performs on national television, their tension and nervousness is really obvious. Not the case, however, with Mulaney. John is a native of Chicago who first started performing when he was seven years old with a children's sketch comedy group called, The Rugrats.

Now based out of New York City, Mulaney has been honing his stand-up chops and making audiences laugh at jokes about the liberty bell and "Law and Order." His calm and comfortable demeanor is a refreshing change of pace from the current yelling, fast paced, hyper-active persona style that saturates the comedy industry today. You would be doing yourself an injustice if you didn't check out John Mulaney.

John will be hosting "Crash Test," a weekly stand-up comic showcase at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater in NY on July 23 and 30. You can also catch him at Rififi on July 25 for "Invite Them Up."

Check out this short clip and be John's friend on Myspace!
