‘All My Children’ to feature transgender character

Jeffery Carlson to play transgender rockstar, Zarf on All My Children

Just when you though soap operas could'nt get anymore gay.

"All My Children" is carving out a spot in television history this week with the soap's debut of a transgender character. The storyline calls for Zarf, a he/she rockstar, to transition from a man to woman. The drama begins when Zarf kisses Bianca, daytime t.v.'s first openly gay character.

"After 36 years, you start rehashing," said executive producer, Julie Hanan Carruthers. "It's inevitable. We didn't want to fall back on the baby-switching story again."
Now, the show's writing team can focus their attention on a story-road less traveled. For instance, a married couple concieve a daughter and later both undergo sex change operations thus making the child's mom her father and her father her mom. 15 years later the family learns that their child was switched at birth. When they re-unite with their lost son they learn that he had died during surgery while trying to become a woman.
